About this puzzle
A large print garden crossword with roses, tulips, seeds and weeds. The clues are plain and friendly, written for anyone who has ever planted a seed or picked a tomato.
On paper the squares are about .66 inches wide, roomy enough for shaky handwriting or a thick marker. The PDF is laid out like a large print puzzle book: the 11×11 grid has page one to itself, the 12 clues are printed at 18 point on page two, and the answer key is on page three. Lay the first two pages side by side and solve without squinting.
Did you know?
- The rose was named the national flower of the United States in 1986.
- A sunflower head is made of hundreds of tiny flowers packed together.
- In the 1630s, Dutch buyers paid extraordinary prices for rare tulip bulbs, an episode known as “tulip mania.”
Talk about it
- What grew in the garden of the home you grew up in?
- Which flower would you choose for your own bouquet?
- Did anyone in your family have a “green thumb”? What was their secret?
- What is the best thing you ever ate straight from a garden?
Activity tip
Set a vase of fresh or silk flowers on the table. When someone fills in ROSE, TULIP, DAISY or PANSY, see if they can spot one in the vase.
